vom Assadstausee (Syrien) überfluteter Ruinenhügel, etwa 130 km östlich von Aleppo. Die älteste Siedlung gehört noch der Mittelsteinzeit an (frühes 9. Jahrtausend v. Chr.) und bestand aus überdachten, 70 cm tiefen Gruben von bis zu 2,5 m Durchmesser. Die Bevölkerung war bereits sesshaft, sie lebte v. a. von Gazellenfleisch und Fisch. Nach einem längeren Intervall folgten drei jungsteinzeitliche Schichten, von denen die beiden älteren noch keine Keramik aufweisen. Die Häuser sind rechtwinklig und aus Lehmziegeln gebaut. Im jüngeren Neolithikum war Abu Hureira mit 11,5 ha eine der größten prähistorischen Siedlungen Vorderasiens. Die Toten wurden unter den Häusern bestattet. Obsidian und Kaurimuscheln weisen auf weit reichende Handelsbeziehungen.
